Bathroom Remodeling Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Free In-Home Consultation
Your bathroom remodel begins with a complimentary consultation at your home. Our design team evaluates the existing bathroom, takes measurements, and discusses your goals. We ask about how you use the space, what frustrates you about the current layout, and what features are most important to you.
During this visit, we also assess the condition of plumbing, electrical, ventilation, and the subfloor. Identifying potential issues early, such as outdated plumbing, water damage, or inadequate ventilation, allows us to build solutions into the plan rather than encountering surprises during construction.
Step 2: Design and Material Selection
Based on your input, our design team develops a custom plan for your bathroom. This includes a layout drawing, material recommendations, and a clear picture of how the finished space will look and function.
Material selection is a collaborative process. We guide you through options for tile, vanity style, countertop material, fixtures, hardware, shower configuration, and lighting. Whether you prefer a modern spa aesthetic or a classic traditional look, we help you build a cohesive design. Visit our bathroom remodeling FAQ page for details on popular material options.
Step 3: Detailed Estimate and Contract
Once the design is finalized, we provide an itemized estimate covering every component of the project. Materials, labor, plumbing, electrical, permits, and debris removal are all listed individually so you can see exactly where your investment goes.
We also discuss financing options, including 0% interest plans on qualifying projects. After you approve the scope and pricing, we schedule your project start date and begin ordering materials.
Step 4: Pre-Construction Preparation
Before work begins, our project manager provides a preparation checklist tailored to your project. Key preparation steps include:
- Clearing the bathroom of all personal items, toiletries, towels, and decorative accessories
- Arranging access to another bathroom if your home has only one (we cover tips for this below)
- Protecting adjacent areas with dust barriers and floor protection, which our team installs
- Confirming the project schedule with your household
We coordinate all material deliveries before the start date so everything is ready when our crew arrives.
Step 5: Demolition
Demolition is the first hands-on phase and typically takes one to two days. Our crew removes the existing vanity, toilet, tub or shower, tile, flooring, and any other materials being replaced. All debris is hauled away and disposed of properly.
During demolition, we inspect the exposed framing, subfloor, and plumbing connections. If we discover water damage, mold, or outdated plumbing that needs to be addressed, we communicate the findings and recommended solutions immediately.
Step 6: Rough-In Work
With the bathroom stripped down, our certified in-house team completes all rough-in plumbing, electrical, and structural work. This phase includes:
- Plumbing: New supply lines, drain connections, and valve placement for the updated layout
- Electrical: Updated wiring for lighting, exhaust fans, outlets (GFCI required in bathrooms), and heated floors if specified
- Waterproofing: Shower pan installation and membrane application to prevent moisture damage behind walls and under floors
- Subfloor repair: Replacing any damaged or weakened subfloor sections
All rough-in work is inspected and approved by the city before walls are closed. Because our team handles every trade, there is no waiting on outside contractors.
Step 7: Installation
Installation transforms the space from a construction zone into your finished bathroom. Work progresses in a specific sequence to ensure quality:
- Cement board and wall preparation in wet areas
- Tile installation on shower walls, floor, and any accent areas
- Vanity and countertop installation
- Toilet installation
- Plumbing fixture connections including faucets, showerheads, and drains
- Mirror, lighting, and accessory installation
- Paint and trim work to complete the finished look
- Glass shower door or enclosure installation
Each trade follows the previous one in a coordinated sequence that our project manager oversees daily.
Step 8: Final Walkthrough and Handover
Before we consider the project complete, our project manager conducts a detailed walkthrough with you. We check every element together: tile alignment, grout consistency, fixture operation, caulk lines, paint quality, and door and drawer function. Any items that need adjustment are addressed before handover.
Your project is protected by our 1-year workmanship warranty, and our team remains available for questions after the remodel is complete.

Managing With One Bathroom Out of Commission
If the bathroom being remodeled is your only bathroom, planning is essential. Here are practical strategies:
- Portable facilities: Renting a portable restroom for the demolition and rough-in phase provides reliable access
- Neighbor or family coordination: Arrange access to a nearby bathroom for showers during the one to two weeks when plumbing is disconnected
- Gym or community center: A gym membership provides reliable shower access during the remodel
- Phased scheduling: Our team can sometimes prioritize plumbing reconnection to minimize the time without a functional toilet
If your home has a second bathroom, the impact is much less significant. Our dust barriers and protection measures keep the rest of your home clean during construction.
