Flooring Installation Process: What to Expect Step by Step

Installing new flooring is one of the most transformative upgrades you can make to your home, and a clear understanding of the process helps you prepare and plan effectively. At The Flooring & Remodeling Shop, our in-house team manages every step from the initial consultation through the final inspection. Here is what to expect when you work with us.

Step 1: Free In-Home Consultation

Every flooring project starts with a complimentary consultation at your home. Our team evaluates your existing floors, takes precise room measurements, and discusses how you use each space. We ask about your design preferences, durability requirements, lifestyle factors (pets, children, high-traffic areas), and budget goals.

This visit also includes an assessment of your subfloor condition. Identifying issues like unevenness, moisture, or structural damage early allows us to build the appropriate preparation into your estimate rather than discovering problems mid-installation.

Step 2: Material Selection

Choosing the right flooring material is one of the most important decisions in the process. Our team helps you compare options based on your needs:

  • Hardwood for warmth, character, and long-term value
  • Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) for water resistance, durability, and realistic wood appearance
  • Laminate for budget-friendly style with modern performance
  • Tile for moisture-prone areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways
  • Carpet for comfort in bedrooms and living spaces

We provide samples so you can see how each material looks in your home’s lighting and alongside your existing finishes. Our design team helps you coordinate flooring with cabinetry, paint, and other design elements, especially if your flooring project is part of a larger kitchen or bathroom remodel.

Step 3: Detailed Estimate and Scheduling

After material selection, we provide a comprehensive estimate that covers material cost, subfloor preparation, removal of existing flooring, installation labor, transitions, trim, and debris disposal. Every line item is clearly identified so you know exactly what you are investing in.

We also review financing options, including 0% interest plans on qualifying projects. Once you approve the estimate, we schedule your installation date and order materials.

Step 4: Room Preparation

Before our installation crew arrives, there are a few steps to prepare your home:

  • Furniture moving: Clear the rooms where flooring will be installed. Our team can handle furniture moving if you prefer, or you can move items yourself to save on the project cost.
  • Clear the floor area: Remove area rugs, floor lamps, and any items stored on the floor.
  • Closets: Empty closet floors if flooring will be installed inside closets.
  • Appliance coordination: For kitchen flooring, appliances may need to be temporarily disconnected and moved. Our team handles this as part of the installation.
  • Pet and child planning: Designate a safe area away from the work zone.

Our project manager provides a specific preparation checklist tailored to your project scope before the start date.

Step 5: Removal of Existing Flooring

On installation day, our crew begins by removing the existing flooring. The time required depends on the material:

  • Carpet and pad: Removal is typically fast, taking a few hours for most rooms.
  • Laminate or floating floors: Click-lock systems come up quickly.
  • Glued-down vinyl or linoleum: Requires more time and effort to remove adhesive residue.
  • Ceramic or stone tile: The most labor-intensive removal, requiring chipping and subfloor cleanup.

All old materials are hauled away and disposed of properly. We keep your property clean and organized throughout the process.

Step 6: Subfloor Preparation

A solid, level subfloor is the foundation of any quality flooring installation. After removing the old material, our team inspects and prepares the subfloor:

  • Leveling: Low spots are filled with leveling compound, and high spots are ground down to create a flat surface.
  • Moisture testing: For materials sensitive to moisture (hardwood, laminate), we test the subfloor to ensure moisture levels are within the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Moisture barrier installation: A vapor barrier or underlayment is installed as required by the flooring manufacturer and subfloor type.
  • Repair: Any sections of subfloor with water damage, rot, or structural weakness are replaced.

Proper subfloor preparation prevents issues like squeaking, uneven surfaces, and premature flooring failure.

Step 7: Installation

With the subfloor prepared, installation begins. The process varies by material type:

Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood

Planks are acclimated to your home’s temperature and humidity before installation. Solid hardwood is typically nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor. Engineered hardwood can be nailed, glued, or floated depending on the subfloor type. Installers work row by row, staggering joints for structural integrity and visual appeal.

Luxury Vinyl Plank and Laminate

These products use a click-lock floating system that does not require nails or adhesive. Planks are installed over an underlayment, and the floor floats over the subfloor. Installation is typically faster than hardwood.

Tile

Tile installation involves spreading mortar, setting each tile, allowing cure time, and then grouting and sealing. This process takes longer per square foot than plank-style flooring but delivers a permanent, water-resistant surface.

Carpet

Carpet is stretched over tack strips along the perimeter and secured to the pad. Seams are positioned in low-visibility areas for a clean finished look.

Step 8: Transitions, Trim, and Finishing Details

After the main flooring is installed, our crew installs transition strips between rooms with different flooring types, baseboards or quarter-round molding along walls, and threshold pieces at doorways. These finishing details give the project a polished, professional appearance.

Step 9: Final Inspection and Walkthrough

Our project manager conducts a final inspection with you before the project is complete. We walk through every room together, checking for proper fit, clean seams, level surfaces, and consistent appearance. Any items that need attention are addressed immediately.

Your installation is backed by our 1-year workmanship warranty, and our team remains available for any questions after the project is complete.

Know your project timeline

How Long Does Flooring Installation Take?

A full bathroom remodel typically takes two to four weeks from demolition to completion. The timeline depends on the scope of work:

Luxury vinyl plank or laminate:
Most rooms can be completed in one to two days. A full home installation typically takes three to five days.

Hardwood
Expect two to four days for a typical home, plus acclimation time of two to three days before installation begins.
Tile:
Due to mortar cure time and grouting, tile takes three to five days for a standard area.
Carpet:
Most homes can be fully carpeted in one to two days.
These timelines assume subfloor preparation is minimal. Projects requiring significant subfloor work or removal of difficult existing materials may take additional time.
