What a Kitchen Remodel Covers
1
Cabinetry is usually the largest single line item in a kitchen remodel, and it sets the ceiling for how the finished room reads. Semi-custom cabinets come in fixed sizes with a wide range of door styles and finishes; fully custom cabinetry is built to the room’s actual dimensions, which matters most in kitchens with unusual walls, ceiling heights, or angles. Where existing cabinet boxes are structurally sound, refacing โ new doors, drawer fronts, and veneer over the existing frames โ is a legitimate alternative to full replacement.
Countertop work covers material selection, templating, fabrication, and installation. Templating happens after the cabinets are set, because the template has to match what was actually installed rather than the plan drawing. Sink and cooktop cutouts, edge profile, and seam placement are all decided at templating โ seam location in particular is worth settling before fabrication rather than discovering afterward.
Layout changes range from relocating a sink or range to opening the kitchen into an adjacent living area. Moving plumbing or gas lines affects both cost and schedule more than moving cabinetry does, because that work happens inside walls or under the floor. Any change involving the removal of a wall needs to be assessed for structural load before design decisions are finalized.
Backsplash work is where a kitchen’s detail quality becomes visible. The decisions that matter are where the pattern starts and stops, how tile terminates at outlets and cabinet edges, and how the field meets the range or hood. Outlet placement in particular is far easier to adjust before tile goes up than after.

An island can be added, resized, or reworked to change how the kitchen functions โ adding seating, adding storage, or relocating a sink or cooktop into the island itself. An island carrying plumbing or electrical needs supply and drain lines run through the floor, which is a different scope than a freestanding prep surface. Clearance โ the walking space between the island and the surrounding cabinets โ is the constraint that most often determines whether a planned island size actually works in the room.
Kitchen Flooring
Kitchen flooring has to handle spills, dropped cookware, and concentrated wear in front of the sink and range. Hardwood, tile, luxury vinyl plank, and laminate all appear in kitchens, and they behave differently under water exposure โ covered in more detail below.

Kitchen lighting works in layers: general ceiling light, task lighting at the work surfaces, and accent or decorative fixtures. Under-cabinet lighting does the most practical work of the three, since wall cabinets cast a shadow directly onto the countertop below them. Kitchens also need dedicated circuits for major appliances, which in older homes often means panel work as part of the project.
Plumbing and Appliance Integration
This covers sink and faucet installation, dishwasher supply and drain connections, refrigerator water lines, gas connections for ranges and cooktops, and venting for hoods. Appliance integration is a dimensional problem as much as a plumbing one โ panel-ready and built-in appliances have to be accounted for in the cabinet layout before cabinets are ordered, not after they arrive.
